German Nick Heidfeld, who is aiming to impress the Williams team to beat Antonio Pizzonia to the second racing seat, boosted his chances by topping the times on the first day of work, in the meantime outpacing Australian Mark Webber.
Heidfeld, who like Webber focused on reliability work with the FW26B chassis, was over a tenth of a second faster than the Australian after 81 laps. Webber covered a total of 90.
BAR-Honda were the only other team in action at Jerez, with both Anthony Davidson and Enrique Bernoldi driving the 2005 concept car. The British test driver was the quickest of the two, outpacing his Brazilian teammate by over a second.
Testing resumes tomorrow, when Ferrari, Renault and Toyota and schedules to join.
