Heidfeld on Top at Valencia - Day Two

Nick Heidfeld finished on top of the timesheets on the second day of testing at Valencia, where five Formula One teams are in action this week.

Nick Heidfeld finished on top of the timesheets on the second day of testing at Valencia, where five Formula One teams are in action this week.

Heidfeld outpaced Brazilian Antonio Pizzonia as both men continue to fight for the remaining racing seat at the Williams team. The German driver was slightly over a tenth of a second quicker than Pizzonia, who had topped the times on Tuesday.

Giancarlo Fisichella was third fastest at the wheel of the Renault R24, while his teammate Fernando Alonso continued putting miles in the new R25 which was unveiled yesterday. Alonso completed just 29 laps during the session on his way to the eighth fastest time.

"Our programme with the R25 was delayed by electrical problems this morning, but we prefer to be cautious and thorough at this early stage of running the car, and we took time to identify and solve the problems," explained Renault's chief test engineer Christian Silk.

"Fernando began running more normally at the end of the day, but conditions were not good at this time: I think all the teams struggled with the gusty winds today. We haven't begun working on set-up or performance runs yet, and those will be our aims for tomorrow."

Red Bull were the only team with three drivers on track, with Scot David Coulthard finishing ahead of Christian Klien and Vitantonio Liuzzi, who joined his teammates today after missing the first day of work.

Anthony Davidson, who yesterday lost another Honda engine, was again hit by trouble today and caused one of the red flags when his BAR-Honda 007 stopped on track in the morning. Teammate Takuma Sato was also in action and completed 109 laps in the second 007.

Toyota drivers Ricardo Zonta and Olivier Panis were seventh and 11th quickest respectively as the Japanese squad worked with their new TF105.

Testing continues tomorrow.
