Head: We want points lead for Suzuka

Williams technical director Patrick Head says that a specific Williams target has been set to go to the Suzuka season finale with Juan Montoya enjoying a points advantage over Michael Schumacher. The Colombian currently trails the German by three points

It is not that Head thinks Williams cannot beat Ferrari at Suzuka, merely that he does not wish to be in a situation where the championship can be resolved in Schumacher's favour by contact.

"Certainly Michael has been particularly strong at Suzuka over the years," Head conceded, "but we have had experience of going into a final race one point behind in '94 [with Damon Hill] and in '97 [with Jacques Villeneuve]. Both races had the outcome of a bump between the two cars, one of which worked in Michael's favour and one of which didn't.

"We'd much prefer to try and avoid that situation and we do that if we can go to the last race ahead on points. It's certainly the preferred target.

"We will be looking to finish Indianapolis with Juan ahead of Michael, and preferably with a car or two in between."
