Head expresses more engine concerns

Williams-BMW's technical director Patrick Head expressed more concerns in Malaysia about impending changes in the Formula 1 regulations due to be discussed by the F1 Commission in Paris on Tuesday.

"I'm just extremely disappointed about the mechanism by which these new proposals come about," said Head. "[The FIA President] Max Mosley has been publicly saying that the engine regulations will be stable until 2007 and then, on the other hand, in a manner which did not consult the interests of the engine manufacturers, threatens a change which is as big a change as suggesting it should be a different number of cylinders or a different capacity."

Head added that he is not sure that the motivation is necessarily to save money or whether, in fact, limiting engine usage will achieve that.

"I just don't think it's been well thought out," he added. "I'm not saying that the end result might not be the same, I just don't like the mechanism. Maybe BMW wouldn't produce an engine that would do 700-800kms, maybe they would produce one that does 450kms and we do 70kms in practice, 10 laps on Saturday morning and eight laps in the afternoon. The question is: is that good for F1?

"Of course, Max would use the argument that the teams would never agree. He has previously admitted that Machiavelli's book is his favourite, and actually sent a copy to Frank!" Head said with a smile on his face. "Basically, that's what it's about - divide and rule."
