Haas has held talks with Kevin Magnussen about a drive for 2017

Magnussen is understood to be one of three names in the frame for the remaining seat with his current team Renault following its signing of Nico Hulkenberg, with Jolyon Palmer and Esteban Ocon also in the running.

Haas, though, is also evaluating its options as it has not yet taken a decision on whether to retain Esteban Gutierrez for 2017, alongside Romain Grosjean.

"We've spoken with Kevin, like we've talked to a few other drivers," Steiner told Autosport.

"There are not 10 [on the shortlist] any more, we are down to two or three, but we are talking, with Esteban also still in the mix."

Despite the interest from Haas, Magnussen has previously made clear his preference is to stay with Renault.

"I want to stay here, that's my target and what I want to do," he said.

"It's a factory team that has the ability to fight for championships in the future, and that's what I want to be a part of."

Assessing the shape of the driver market, Steiner added: "There are obviously a few seats available in F1, and everybody is trying to get their different agendas in.

"You want the best driver, with a lot of money, and you have the pros and cons of getting money or not.

"Pretty soon someone will make a decision, and then the rest will fall into place hopefully.

"At the moment it's taking up a lot of my time to keep in touch, or to try and keep on top of what is happening, so I would be quite happy to sign someone soon."

Magnussen was an option for Haas last year prior to signing Grosjean and Gutierrez, with Steiner confirming he is an admirer of the 24-year-old.

"As I say, we've talked with Kevin, and a few others, and I will not deny that," he said. "It's my job to do that.

"It was no secret we spoke with him last year in Monza, and we have always kept in touch. He's a driver who has a place in F1."
