Grapevine: Williams would like to see Qatar GP

Frank Williams says he would like to see Qatar host a Formula 1 Grand Prix in the future, as he put the team's name forward in support of the country's bid to become the first Middle Eastern nation to host the FIFA World Cup in 2022

Speaking during the Aspire4Sport conference in Doha, the team principal told the Gulf Times that the Losail venue, which currently hosts MotoGP's season-opener and the category's only night race, could easily be adapted to put on an F1 grand prix.

"I would love to see a race in Qatar because of our involvement here," he said, referring to Williams's recent announcement that it is to build a technology centre in the country. "In my humble opinion, the Losail circuit is admirably suited for an F1 race."

Rubens Barrichello, who accompanied Williams to the conference, added: "I have driven here for filming in the past and found the track to be very favourable. Quite honestly, we could have a race over here."

With the 2011 season featuring the largest calendar in the sport's history - visiting 20 venues - Williams added that he believed F1 was reaching its limit to how many races can be staged in a season: "I would love to see more races, but I don't think we could ever have more than 22 without compromising the preparations and driver safety."
