Grapevine: Eventful Race for Newey to 10th
McLaren technical director Adrian Newey may not have followed in the footsteps of Kimi Raikkonen with a last-lap victory, but he certainly did not embarrass himself in an outing in the AVO Ginetta Championship at Silverstone on Sunday
Newey had been handed a guest drive in the double-header thanks to car sponsor Sony PlayStation 2 but, after qualifying eighth, it all went wrong in the first race when he spun off on the warm-up lap. That left him starting at the back for the second race.
He quickly made up for his earlier woes as he charged through from 33rd on the grid to 12th place after just two laps. He had got up to ninth before spinning off the track, dropping back down to 12th, and eventually finished 10th.
"The first two laps were amazing," said Newey. "Cars were spinning off and flying across me.
"There were times when I could have pushed the car harder or take on more cars, but after the first race I wanted to make sure I got a finish under by belt.
"I just hope PlayStation 2 invite me back next year to drive the car again. I loved it!"
