Grapevine: Coulthard Hires Ex-Marine as Fitness Trainer

McLaren driver David Coulthard hired a former soldier in the Royal Marines Regiment to make him fitter, after his personal trainer left him at the end of last season.

McLaren driver David Coulthard hired a former soldier in the Royal Marines Regiment to make him fitter, after his personal trainer left him at the end of last season.

Coulthard, considered one of the fittest drivers today, has been looking for a new fitness guru throughout the winter. He told the Sun he had trouble finding a trainer that could keep up with his fitness regime, prior to landing ex-Royal Marine Gerry Convey.

"Another driver gave me the name of a trainer and I decided to give him a trial run by taking him on a two-hour cycle run along the coast," Coulthard told the British tabloid.

"After a few miles, I had to keep stopping so he could catch up and by the time we finally returned to Monaco he was huffing and puffing. It was quite hilarious because he just didn't have the stamina I was looking for."

In the last few weeks, Coulthard has been training with Convey who, according to Coulthard, has been able to push him forward - the Scottish driver losing weight and stating he feels fitter and more prepared for the upcoming season than ever.

"You could say there is no border I am not prepared to cross to ensure I am in the best possible shape," Coulthard said. "Gerry has really been putting me through it and pushing me to the limit - and that's what I always strive for.

"My commitment and focus is stronger than at any other time in the past. My passion for the sport is high - and so is my energy and enthusiasm. I know I have what it takes to win races and, if the car is up to the job, I'm capable of delivering."
