Grapevine: Bild: Schumacher in McLaren Link

Michael Schumacher has faced no end of rumours about a renewal of his partnership with Mercedes-Benz ever since he came into Formula One - and even now they still refuse to go away

Two meetings held between the seven-times World Champion and Mercedes-Benz motorsport boss Norbert Haug at the Hungarian and Turkish Grands Prix have been enough to prompt speculation in German newspaper Bild that a switch from Ferrari to McLaren could be on the cards once again.

On the back of a fairly disastrous campaign, Bild suggests that Schumacher could turn his back on Ferrari in a bid to get a more competitive car next season - although it draws short of actually claiming that a deal is imminent.

Haug himself is quoted as confirming that the meetings took place - but insisting that they were not to discuss contractual matters.

"It is correct that we met," said Haug. "We spoke only about the future of Formula One. I think it is rather impossible that he leaves Ferrari."

Schumacher's manager Willi Weber has also insisted that his driver remains committed to Ferrari - even though talks about extending his current deal beyond the end of 2006 have been put on hold. "They met," said Weber. "But it concerned other things."

The latest rumours may not be unexpected at a time when Ferrari's fortunes are down, but they have been enough for Schumacher to comment about them on his own website on Monday.

"I don't want to go into the rumours of me parting company with Ferrari," he said. "Everyone knows how closely linked the team and I are."
