Gene Outpaces Massa at Monza

Ferrari's test driver Gene and Sauber's Massa were the only two men in action today after the Toyota and BAR teams carried out their scheduled tests at the Silverstone circuit.

Gene finished on top of the times with a best lap of 1:21.538, while Massa was around half a second slower after 90 laps.

"Today Felipe ran the scheduled medium downforce programme in preparation for the forthcoming two North American races, whereby the focus was on the United States Grand Prix," said Sauber's Jacky Eeckelaert, chief race engineer.

"He used particularly the morning to set the car up according to his driving style. Later he assessed several Michelin tyres for Indianapolis to enable us to make a first decision this evening.

"Tomorrow he will verify the gathered aerodynamic data for us, but will also further work with Michelin on the tyre selection for Indianapolis."

The test continues tomorrow.

Today's times:
