Gascoyne mystified by Albers' mistake

Spyker's chief technical officer Mike Gascoyne says he is baffled about why Christijan Albers raced away early during their near pitstop disaster in the French Grand Prix

Gascoyne mystified by Albers' mistake

Albers was being refuelled by the team when, just as his lollipop man instructed him to get in gear and get ready to leave, the Dutchman shot out of the pits.

In doing so, he took his fuel hose with him onto the track and dragged some team members on to the ground.

Luckily the incident did not cause any serious injuries, and there was no fire, but Gascoyne says he does not understand what his driver was thinking.

The race stewards were equally unimpressed and handed Albers a 5,000 Euros fine for his actions.

Gascoyne said: "I don't know why he did that - obviously he was frustrated by having to wait behind Adrian (Sutil, who had pitted in front of him).

"But he would only have lost three or four seconds. It wouldn't have been a disaster.

"Flicking the lollipop is just standard procedure. It tells him he's got three or four seconds before we release him. He's an experienced driver. He should know what to do."

Gascoyne praised his team members who recovered from the incident to successfully refuel Sutil later in the race.

"Fortunately nobody was still on the car and the boys did a great job - there were a few grazes but the boys are all tough. And they did a great job for Adrian on the next pitstop. Well done to them."
