Heinz-Harald Frentzen reckons that the new Formula 1 regulations introduced for this season will give midfield teams more of a chance against top-line outfits

The German is also excited by the prospect of one-lap qualifying, but has backed team-mate Nick Heidfeld in criticising the Head and Neck support (HANS) device that is to be made compulsory in F1 this year.

"The whole issue of preventing work on the car between qualifying and the race was to prevent qualifying cars, so it might give more of a chance to the non-top teams," said Frentzen. "The team has less chance to prepare the car so we have to rethink the logic of the whole weekend. So you need an experienced driver and team.

"As for one lap qualifying I'm really looking forward to it. If you've been karting it's nothing new. For a driver I'm sure it's going to require some type of mental preparation."

During testing at Barcelona today (Wednesday), Frentzen tried two different types of HANS device, one of which had been modified by the Sauber team. However, like Nick Heidfeld, who tried both devices' yesterday, Frentzen did not fell comfortable wearing either unit.

"I tried both the FIA and the other HANS device and somehow we have to make it work. It is a different kind of discomfort. It pushes against the collarbone. This configuration is not right for me so we have to get the right shape."
