Fisichella Confident of Victory

Australian Grand Prix winner Giancarlo Fisichella is confident that his Renault team will be able to maintain their edge over Ferrari's new F2005 at this weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix

Although World Champion Michael Schumacher has declared his hope that Ferrari can expect a leap forward in pace after their disappointment of Malaysia, a defiant Fisichella is adamant that Renault are still the team to beat in Formula One at the moment.

Speaking about the threat posed by Ferrari's new F2005, Fisichella said: "It will be better than their old car, for sure, but we don't know how much stronger. They will be quick, but I still think we are in better shape.

"Renault has done a fantastic job this year on all the aspects of the package under the new rules: we have a good engine, the chassis is easy to drive, and the Michelin tyres are very competitive. I am feeling confident."

Although Renault did not enjoy one of their most competitive outings in Bahrain last year, with the track not playing to the aerodynamic strengths of the team's car, Fisichella sees no reason why the team cannot be in the hunt for victory this time out.

"The characteristics can be quite strange: the sand is a problem, especially on Friday morning although it cleans up afterwards, and by the race the conditions are OK," he added. "It is hot as well, but after going to Malaysia and not having any reliability problems, I don't think that is anything to worry about.

"We have a new engine for this race, and the reliability has been perfect so far. The R25 is good, and I think it will be well balanced here too, so there is no reason why we cannot fight for the win."
