Ferrari on Top, Webber Drives R4 - Morning Session

The Ferrari team dominated the morning session on their first day of work at the Barcelona circuit this week, with their three drivers present finishing on top of the times.

Brazilian Rubens Barrichello was the quickest of the Ferrari trio with the first of the F2002 chassis, while Italian test driver Luca Badoer was second quickest ahead of World Champion Michael Schumacher. The German only completed seven laps in the morning after he lost control of his car and crashed into the tyre barriers of the first corner of the Spanish track.

"He came out grinning and said 'Oops, that's a good start to the season'," said his spokeswoman Sabine Kehm after the German came off on his first lap at the Circuit de Catalunya.

The incident was minor with the car skidding off the road on a very cold morning in Barcelona, bumping the tyre barrier and damaging the rear wing.

Australian Mark Webber took to the track with the new Jaguar R4 that was unveiled today. Webber, whose car was hit by a mechanical problem during the session, completed 24 laps and set the fourth fastest time some 1.5 seconds off the pace set by Barrichello. Webber's teammate Antonio Pizzonia posted the fifth quickest time in last year's R3 car.

The BAR team joined the test today, and Canadian Jacques Villeneuve drove the new Honda-powered 005 today for the first time. He only completed four laps and was unable to set a competitive time.

Italian Giancarlo Fisichella, who began testing with the new Jordan on Monday, was again hit by trouble and could only complete an installation lap.

Testing continues in the afternoon.
