Formula 1 testing gathered momentum today (Tuesday) as seven of the 11 teams tested at three different circuits around Europe

Big guns McLaren-Mercedes and Ferrari were both present at Mugello, but neither team had any of their race-drivers present. Instead test drivers Olivier Panis and Luca Badoer took the reigns, with McLaren's Panis topping the times followed by Sauber's Pedro Diniz.

The Swiss team fielded two cars, the second being occupied by this year's British Formula Renault Champion Kimi Raikkonen. The 20-year-old Finn, who is managed by Jenson Button's manager David Robertson, was the slowest driver of the day, but only two seconds behind third-placed Ferrari tester Badoer.

The session was extended by 40 minutes at the behest of Ferrari after Badoer put his F1-2000 into the barrier. The team had to re-build the car and wanted to carry out a shakedown before the end of the day. And when you own the circuit...

The Williams-BMW and Benetton teams continued at Estoril. Ralf Schumacher set the quickest time and completed a mammoth 86 laps during the day. Benetton's Giancarlo Fisichella was second, followed by Australian Mark Webber, who continued set-up work for the Enstone-based team.

Finally, at Silverstone Jaguar driver Luciano Burti beat the BAR-Hondas of Jacques Villeneuve and Ricardo Zonta to the top of the time sheets. Villeneuve was only 0.2s behind the Brazilian and completed the most laps - 73. Ricardo Zonta was third, another 0.1s behind.

Testing continues tomorrow at all three circuits and while the Mugello test was due to finish on Thursday, running will now continue until Friday. The marshals at the Italian track are not available on Thursday as they are attending the funeral of the marshal who was killed at the Italian Grand Prix at the weekend.
