Ecclestone Wants 'Lottery' Qualifying System

Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone wants a new qualifying format by which the top ten grid positions would be decided using a lottery system.

"I'd like to see the fastest 10 in qualifying drawn by lottery for the grid," Ecclestone told Reuters on Sunday. "So you would have a different grid for sure and all the guys who are in the top 10 would have a good chance of being on pole.

"We'd have qualifying with low fuel, 20 runners, the top 10 of those 20 run again to establish who is quickest of the 10. They'd get points for that and then a lottery for the grid."

International Automobile Federation (FIA) president Max Mosley, however, said today that the format is not going to change before next season.

"There's no way it's going to change this season," the world motor sport chief said at the Monaco Grand Prix. "Next season...you can never say never but at the moment there doesn't seem to be enough evidence that we need a change, nor is there a clear proposal which is obviously better than what we've got now."

Ecclestone has criticised the format introduced this season to liven up the show on offer and revive flagging television audiences after a year of Ferrari domination.

Asked about Mosley's comments, Ecclestone said: "This year we won't (change). But he can't see that far ahead maybe."
