Dominguez rumours grow

Speculation that Mario Dominguez could switch from Champ Cars to Formula 1 in 2006 with the new Midland F1 Team is growing, after his manager claimed that a visit to the Dallara factory on Tuesday is a precursor to an actual deal being signed

Dominguez rumours grow

Although the Mexican has not impressed enough in the United States in terms of pace to be seriously considered by front-running teams, it is believed that major sponsorship backing and a big push by his management could prove crucial in allowing his F1 dream to become reality.

It is understood that Dominguez and his manager Henri Luzet are scheduled to visit the headquarters of Dallara, the Italian racing car constructor that will build Midland F1's cars, to move closer an actual deal.

Speaking before the visit, Luzet was quoted as saying: "The visit to the Dallara plant is the next logical step in a process that has been underway for several weeks. Mario Dominguez will drive for Midland F1 in 2006, that is for sure.

"After talks with Sauber and Minardi, we have taken a more pragmatic attitude. We will meet with Mr. Dallara but I am not yet sure if Alex Shnaider will be there; he is a fairly secretive man but he just might make an appearance for the occasion.

"There was a time when things were up in the air because Mario is tied to Herdez Competition until the end of 2005 and his team manager, Keith Wiggins has an option on him.

"Midland was interested by the sale of Jaguar, which could have complicated things for Mario if he was to drive in F1 in 2005. In the end, that's not what happened and everything cooled off, which is a good thing."

The late Mauro Forghieri played a key role in Ferrari’s mid-1960s turnaround, says STUART CODLING, and his pretty, intricate 1512 was among the most evocative cars of the 1.5-litre era. But a victim of priorities as Formula 1 was deemed less lucrative than success in sportscars, its true potential was never seen in period
