The fact that a tyre closer to an intermediate works in a wider range of operating conditions has led both Bridgestone and Michelin to go that route in Brazil, but as evidenced by Friday, neither wet is up to the job in heavy rain.

Ferrari technical director Ross Brawn said: "I would like the one wet tyre rule reconsidered because it compromises safety."

McLaren boss Ron Dennis, however, thinks that one tyre is fine, but that its specification should be governed by the regulations so that it is much more of a full wet.

"The reason we have one wet tyre is simple: cost," Dennis said at Interlagos. "If you have two wet tyres you have all the rims that go with them, plus all the costs of developing them.

"Where we failed was in not determining a regulation that imposes on us an obligation to bring effectively a full wet. With wet tyres we refer to land and sea, which means how much tyre to how many gaps. You can specify the land/sea ratio and a minimum tread depth of, say 1.5cms. You would have to make pretty hard rain tyres in order to make them last, but then at least it would be the same for everyone."
