Da Matta Quickest at Silverstone - Day Two

Brazilian Cristiano da Matta finished on top of the timesheets on the second day testing at the Silverstone circuit, where the weather again hampered the progress of the teams present at the British track.

Brazilian Cristiano da Matta finished on top of the timesheets on the second day testing at the Silverstone circuit, where the weather again hampered the progress of the teams present at the British track.

Da Matta, second fastest yesterday behind Williams driver Ralf Schumacher, outpaced the German today, lapping more than a whole second quicker with the Toyota TF103.

"We had another decent day of running and got through most of the long job list we had today, despite rain in the morning and early afternoon," said da Matta. "We made some good improvements to the TF103's set-up overnight and did a bit of tyre testing.

"Overall it has been a highly productive two days for me in Silverstone with over 150 laps completed. I am handing the car over to Ricardo for the final day tomorrow, as I am going to Belo Horizonte before the Canadian Grand Prix to acclimatise myself to the time difference in Montreal, which is the same as in Brazil."

Schumacher, meanwhile, continued with yesterday's programme, concentrating on mechanical set-up work.

"Once again, intermittent showers hampered the testing schedule but Ralf managed to complete 60 laps," said Sam Michael, Williams' chief operations engineer. "We continued with yesterday's programme of mechanical set up work, which included engine reliability running and tyre testing for Michelin and we are fairly happy with the progress made."

Jordan began today their first two-car test since the start of the season, working with both their racing drivers Ralph Firman and Giancarlo Fisichella. The British rookie, who forced the session to be stopped when his car stopped on track in the afternoon, outpaced his Italian teammate by more than a second.

The Renault team were also scheduled to begin a two-day test at Silverstone, but the French squad decided to cancel today's session after the British circuit was hit by rain in the morning. Renault are expected to kick off their test tomorrow.
