Craig Pollock

British American Racing boss Craig Pollock faced a difficult weekend in Magny-Cours, after learning that Jordan will also have a works Honda engine supply in 2001 and beyond. It had been generally understood that BAR had an exclusive deal, but it now seems that this, in fact, concerned chassis co-operation, and only BAR will have Honda chassis engineers on-site. Pollock is also under enormous pressure to retain the services of Jacques Villeneuve, who is considering an offer to join Benetton and Renault. Fortunately for BAR the weekend had a happy ending. A new high downforce aerodynamic package improved the car's performance, and after qualifying seventh Jacques Villeneuve made a good start and jumped up to fifth place. He gained another spot when Michael Schumacher retired, and finished fourth, having held off Ralf Schumacher in the closing laps. The result equalled the team's best performance in Australia, where more cars retired. Adam Cooper talked to Pollock about the current situation



"I was fully prepared that it could happen, but the fact that it has happened means that there's a certain amount of disappointment. On the other hand Honda would have had to develop another engine for the Mugen programme, and it probably makes more sense that they are developing one engine as opposed to two engines. So that I can understand."



"I would say there's no question that they are putting their eggs in two baskets, just in case, because our performance hasn't been that of McLaren - although it's not that far off Jordan. We're in sixth place in the championship, and Jordan is in fifth place. I think Eddie's done a good job to get the engine, he's convinced them, and I'm actually quite happy to step up to the challenge. I'm not worried at all."



"We have a very clear situation where we know we will get the number one engine with Honda. It just so happens that maybe now there's a second team getting exactly the same engine! But again, if we start worrying about Jordan, then we're not focussing on the true challengers to championships, and that's McLaren and Ferrari. Jordan also have to be a little worried, because they are going to have to challenge us, and if they can't beat us then they're going to get a lot of egg on their faces."



"There are two works engine supplied teams, but there's only one team which will is going to have the chassis developments, and that will be us."



"It's a timely result. The result has come through 306 people - we've got 305 in the factory, and Jacques in the car. What they've done is build an evolution for the car that has actually worked, and it's worked on the circuits where we were bad. Basically we should now only get better. We're going in the right direction."



"It will help us out here and places like Austria and Hungary, places where we definitely risk having less performance than for example Hockenheim and other high speed circuits. The car was far better balanced for Jacques. He could actually drive the car, and was in a position to fight. I don't think we're going to be fighting McLaren and Ferrari, but we'll certainly be able to fight the rest and stay in front."



"It's a good boost for everybody. We're two points away from Jordan in the championship. We've been in the championship one a half years, they've been in the championship for 10 years. I think it shows that we've increased performance substantially. Jordan had a bad qualifying, but I think maybe the race showed that Jacques qualified badly! They certainly couldn't catch him and it wasn't a question of him holding them up."



"A podium was possible in Canada, and we could even have been second or won the race if we'd actually played out the strategy the way we should have done. The problem is we've messed up in our opportunities. We haven't grasped them. If we grasp every opportunity between now and the end of the season we can creep up in the championship."



"I would hope so, I would certainly hope so. Jacques is not being particularly kind to me at the moment! He's going to squeeze every little piece out of me that he wants, and mostly he wants performance. And what's he's doing is right."
