Chinese GP: FIA makes special arrangements at nearby hospital
The FIA has transferred qualified neurosurgery staff to a hospital near the Shanghai track, to ensure the Chinese Grand Prix takes place even if the Formula 1 medical helicopter cannot fly
Friday's running at Shanghai had to be cut short after low cloud meant there was not enough visibility for the helicopter to be able to land at the main hospital that is 40km away.
With regulations demanding that an ambulance is able to reach the hospital within approximately 20 minutes, the FIA had no option but to cancel practice.
Following efforts by the FIA over the weekend, a decision has been made to move required neurosurgery staff to the nearer Ruijin hospital - which can be reached by road within the required time.
A statement issued by the FIA on Sunday morning said: "The Ruijin Hospital is only 5km from the circuit and a ten-minute journey by car but, whilst it is suitable for most anticipated circumstances, it does not have neurosurgery capabilities.
"However, special arrangements have now been made for a complete neurosurgery team from Huashan Hospital to be present at Ruijin Hospital on Sunday.
"As a result, and following an inspection by the FIA medical team yesterday afternoon, the FIA is satisfied that the Ruijin Hospital will not only be easily accessible in all weather conditions, but will also be able to provide the required care."
