Lap 67: In one of the most unusual finishes to a Grand Prix, Hakkinen wins as the safety car peels off into the pits. He is closely followed by a bunched-up field. Fisichella finishes second, ahead of Irvine, Schumacher and Herbert.

Lap 66: Safety car stays out.

Lap 65: Heinz-Harald Frentzen crashes, bringing out the safety car.

Lap 62: Irvine laps consistently quicker than race leader Hakkinen.

Lap 60: Eddie Irvine records the fastest lap (1.20:674)

Lap 59: Race order is Hakkinen, Frentzen, Fisichella, Irvine, Ralf Schumacher and Herbert.

Lap 53: Irvine overtakes Herbert, but moves directly in front and the two are forced off the track. Herbert furious with the Farrari driver.

Lap 50: Zanardi takes an excursion onto the gravel, but rejoins.
Coulthard in pits again.
Irvine desperate to gain ground, and chasing Herbert hard for fifth.

Lap 47: Coulthard, Panis, Zanardi and Badoer all given 10-second stop-go penalties. Coulthard's penalty was for speeding in the pit lane. Zanardi was penalised for overtaking the pace car.

Lap 43:Race order - Hakkinen, Frentzen, Fisichella, R Schumacher, Herbert, Diniz.

Lap 40: Coulthard pits. Rejoins in 10th.

Lap 40: Race restarted. Irvine and Coulthard collide at same spot as accident at start of race. Both go onto the grass, but rejoin.

Lap 37: Zanardi and Coulthard into pits.

Lap 35: Hakkinen and Irvine into pits.

Lap 34: Villeneuve slams into barriers at final corner a la M Schumacher, Hill and Zonta. Safety car sent out.

Lap 34: Ralf Schumacher spins onto gravel, but rejoins.
Race order - Hakkinen, Irvine, Coulthard, Fisichella, Frentzen, Diniz.

Lap 30: Hakkinen takes lead as M Schumacher crashes in same place as Hill and Zonta.

Lap 27:M Schumacher lapping consistently faster than Hakkinen. Gap is now 4.274s.
De la Rosa has retired after failing to reappear after pitstop.

Lap 24: M Schumacher extends lead over Hakkinen to 3.236s.

Lap 20: Hakkinen sets fastest lap - 1:21.48.

Lap 18: Leading positions - M Schumacher, Hakkinen, Irvine, Coulthard, Fisichella, Frentzen.

Lap 15: Barrichello pits, drvies straight into garage and retires.

Lap 14: Damon Hill slides into barriers at final corner in same manner as Zonta earlier. Suspen sion damaged, Hill retires.
Ferrari's Schumacher records quickest lap.

Lap 13: Hakinen's McLaren sets fastest lap time (1.21:952).

Lap 10: Michael Schumacher records fastest lap.

Lap 7: Race restarts. Race order at restart - M Schumacher, Hakkinen, Irvine, Fisichella, Coulthard, Frentzen.
Barrichello at back of field.
Retirements - Alesi, Trulli, Zonta, Wurz

Lap 3: Ricardo Zonta hits barriers going into final corner. Right rear wheel damaged, he retires. Alex Zanardi (Williams) drives into gravel trap.

Start: Michael Schumacher pulls straight across in front of Mika Hakkinen going into first corner.

Jarno Trulli's Prost slides across grass and ploughs into Jean Alesi's Sauber and Rubens Barrichello's Stewart.

Safety car out.
