Button Still Unsure about BAR's Pace

Briton Jenson Button said he was still unsure about BAR's pace following today's free practice for the Australian Grand Prix.

"It's great to be back on the race track again," said Button. "It's still difficult to know where we are in respect to the other teams but I think our sessions went to plan and everything seemed to run smoothly.

"We know which direction we want to go in tomorrow, so generally I'm pleased with the start we've made here today."

Button, whose 10 podiums last year helped BAR finish second in the Constructors' Championship behind Ferrari, finished as eighth fastest today. BAR were the surprise of last season, but they were unable to shine in winter testing this year.

Button's teammate Takuma Sato did not enjoy an easy day in the second BAR, the Japanese driver struggling with his car's handling. Sato finished well down the order in 18th position, over a second behind his British teammate.

"I had a difficult start today," said Sato. "I didn't have good grip and there was a small issue with the brakes in the first session. I was happier with the balance when this was fixed for the second session.

"I think that we can continue our improvements tomorrow but there is still a lot of work to do."

Why new look Haas is a litmus test for Formula 1’s new era

OPINION: With teams outside the top three having struggled in Formula 1 in recent seasons, the rules changes introduced in 2022 should have more of an impact this season. How well Haas does, as the poster child for the kind of team that F1 wanted to be able to challenge at the front, is crucial
