Button must shine in 2000

Jenson Button must prove his ability in 2000 if he wants to secure a long-term place in the Williams team, according to team boss Frank Williams

As well as this season's race drivers Button and Ralf Schumacher, Williams also has an option on CART champion Juan Montoya, and the Columbian is keen to come back to Europe within the next two seasons.

According to the Reuters News Agency, Williams said:

'Jenson will need to show us what he can do this year to keep Juan Pablo out of the team.'

Montoya is highly-rated by Williams after testing for the squad during 1998. With no room for him in the team's 1999 line-up, the Columbian was leant to Champ Car kings Target Chip Ganassi Racing and duly clinched the CART title at his first attempt.

'Juan Montoya has a great natural ability,' Williams enthused. 'With him wanting to come back to the team and Jenson and Ralf Schumacher in the car this year, our long-term future appears to be rich with options. That is quite a position for us to be in.'
