Button insists he’s no F1 playboy
Benetton's young British star Jenson Button has returned fire after recent criticism by former world champion Jackie Stewart over his new and extravagant lifestyle
Stewart claimed that he felt Button had got "too much, too soon" after his stunning entry into F1 last year. But Jenson insists that the trappings of F1 stardom haven't affected his approach.
"For some reason Jackie has always had a downer on me," Button told British tabloid The Sun. "But I am as focused as and determined to succeed in Formula 1 as I have ever been. Jackie wrote me off last year when he said I was too inexperienced to cope with Formula 1 and I proved him wrong. I intend to do the same again."
Stewart cited Button's move to Monaco as a sign of success going to his head, but Button claims that was solely on the advice of others for tax reasons.
"The only reason I am earning well now is because I have already shown what I am capable of," said Button. "Everyone knew I would be in for a tough time this season in preparation for Renault taking over next year."
"I still try and lead a fairly simple existence. The jet-set lifestyle is not my scene. All my time is being taken up with training and testing in a bid to make my team truly competitive," he added.
