Briatore Calls for Aggregate Qualifying

Renault team boss Flavio Briatore wants both of Formula One's two qualifying sessions to count towards a grid position with the top ten drivers also taking part in a 'Superpole' style session.
The Italian insisted that the times from Friday's one-hour session should count towards a grid position and claims it would make race tactics more interesting because drivers would have the chance to improve on Saturday.
He added that giving the top ten drivers the chance to take part in a similar session to the 'Superpole' used in World Superbikes would keep fans gripped until the final moments of qualifying.
"I have my ideas and it's a bit different, but I believe that at this moment the best thing is the aggregate time, Friday and Saturday. And then give another qualifying run to the best ten 10 drivers, with qualifying fuel," Briatore said. "With fuel, we never know who is the quickest driver on the grid.
"In the meantime, if we aggregated the times on Friday and Saturday, you would still need to go flat out on Friday and Saturday. The best 10 could maybe do one lap for their grid positions or maybe some points in qualifying."
Briatore insisted the results of Friday's qualifying in Malaysia - where both Ferraris were on the front row with a Williams and two McLarens in the top-five - prove the new rules have not made much difference to the running order.
"I believe nothing has changed," he said. "It's exactly the same as before and today was quite clear. You know whatever we've done, especially at the beginning of a season like this, doesn't modify at all what happened last year.
"I believe Formula One has more incertitude, especially for the race. If our show, our race is too predictable, we lose spectators and we might lose everybody before we make some decision."
