Brawn happy with 'the ultimate'

Ross Brawn described Ferrari's double championship win as "the ultimate"

The Italian team's British technical director was the architect of their first double in 21 years as they took both the driver's and constructors championships.

He said he was so happy he was almost lost for words to describe his joy.

"We have had four years when we could have won the championships, so for us this is now the ultimate," he eventually said. "This has been a long time coming and we have worked long and hard for it.

"Now, however, we have got the double F1 World Championship title and that is the ultimate prize in this sport.

"In 1998, McLaren won both the world titles. Last year we shared them and now, finally, we have won them both.

"McLaren are very tough competitors and it has been a tough year and it makes it all the better for being this hard. I am very happy, in fact so happy it is hard to explain."

Brawn, who was also behind Schumacher winning the world championship for Benetton in 1994 and 1995, admitted that the German's ninth win of the season did not come easily.

"It was quite a tough race for us," Brawn continued, after seeing Schumacher lose his lead to both Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard on the opening straight of the 56 lap race.

"I didn't anticipate McLaren's tactics with David and we became a little exposed at that point.

"But it was a great drive by Michael and a great drive from Rubens and this made a perfect end to a perfect season for us.
