Bookies dismiss Coulthard home win

David Coulthard may be banking on winning the British Grand Prix to rekindle his world championship hopes, but the bookies are lukewarm about the McLaren ace's chances

Ladbrokes are giving the Scot odds of 5-1 to win the race on July 15, whereas Michael and Ralf Schumacher are the hot favourites for the Silverstone showpiece. The brothers are evens money and 11-4 respectively to take the honours a week on Sunday.

But DC, winner of the past two British GPs, can take inspiration from the fact the only man to score three British GP wins in a row was compatriot Jim Clark. Clark, in fact, did one better and scored four straight wins between 1962-65 driving for Lotus.

Coulthard is 31 points off the championship lead and needs a third consecutive British Grand Prix win to get his title chances back on track, but the odds are stacked against his McLaren team closing the gap on rivals Ferrari - according to the bookies.

DC's struggling team mate Mika Hakkinen is 10-1 to win, while the odds of McLaren recording a one-two victory at Silverstone are a sizeable 20-1.

Williams offers the main opposition to Michael Schumacher in the eyes of the odds-makers, with Ralf's team mate Juan Pablo Montoya apparently more likely than Hakkinen to take the spoils at Silverstone - the Colombian is 7-1 to win.

Patriotic punters could have a look at Ulsterman Eddie Irvine. The Jaguar driver drove an impressive race last time out at Magny-Cours and if Irvine can improve on his grid position, he could be a good bet to finish in the top six. Irvine is 125-1 to win the race and a more realistic 9-2 to finish in the points.

Jenson Button fans have been struggling to make money out of the young Englishman so far this year. He is 33-1 to score his first points of the season at Silverstone and if you think he can get the better of team mate Giancarlo Fisichella in the race bookmakers will give you 6-5.
