Baumgartner Sent to Back of the Grid

Hungarian Zsolt Baumgartner received a one-second penalty that sent him to the back of the grid of tomorrow's Italian Grand Prix.

Hungarian Zsolt Baumgartner received a one-second penalty that sent him to the back of the grid of tomorrow's Italian Grand Prix.

Minardi driver Baumgartner cut through the first chicane during his flying lap and set a time of 1:24.808, which was enough to outqualify his teammate Gianmaria Bruni. However, the stewards have given the Hungarian a one-second penalty and he will start from last place.

Baumgartner, however, said he had lost time in the process.

"I locked the brakes up going into the first chicane and slid across the first part of it, losing time in the process," said Baumgartner. "Otherwise, the rest of the lap was better than on the previous run. In any event, I am happy with qualifying today and with the fact I didn't suffer any injuries in the accident."

The Minardi driver was involved in an accident this morning when Italian Giorgio Pantano, in a Jordan, lost control of his car before the Rettifilio chicane in the second session, crashing through a polystyrene marker board and hitting the Minardi of Baumgartner broadside.
