Barrichello and Colleagues Perform at Zandvoort

The Marlboro World Championship Team gave 20,000 Zandvoort spectators a thrilling and spectacular insight into their respective sports on the Saturday of the Marlboro Masters. Randy Mamola spent the whole of the pit straight on the back wheel of his two seater Yamaha, Carlos Checa burned out his rear wheels, Tommi Makinen did 12 doughnuts - in one lap - in his Mitsubishi rally car, and Rubens Barrichello smoked the wheels of his Ferrari F1-2000. This was the scene at Zandvoort on the Saturday of the Marlboro Masters.

Carlos Checa began the demonstration on his Number 7 World Championship 500cc Yamaha, spending entire laps either doing full wheelies or waving. He was soon joined by former World Champion Randy Mamola on the two seater Yamaha, who managed one wheelie which lasted the entire length of the pit straight. Later, both riders smoked their rear wheels while holding the bike on the front brake. The crowd loved it. Checa repeated the process on the pit straight, gradually prescribing an entire, smokey circle.

Almost immediately, Tommi Makinen shot out of the pits - straight into two doughnuts, then spending a lap on circuit before doing another three doughnuts. Next time around, he was scarcely straight anywhere around the circuit: in all, there were 12 doughnuts in one lap. Then more on the next laps before Tommi came back into the pits, leaving one Marlboro promotions girl with a tale to tell; she had been his passenger throughout and was left quite dizzy.

Rubens Barrichello appeared in the pit lane in the Ferrari and immediately did a standing start. All around the first lap, the wail of the Ferrari's V10 was accompanied by flame from the exhausts and Rubens waving to the crowds. Sparks flashed from under the car as he completed lap one, then he did a few more standing starts before setting a fastest lap of 1:23.339. A couple of spin turns later and then came the finale.

Rubens was joined on circuit by Carlos and Tommi as the trio did one final lap together. They ended three abreast down the pit straight, stopping on the start/finish line to rapturous applause from the crowd, climbing from their machines and waving to the crowds.
