BAR to start 2004 with old car
BAR will not build a new car in time for the start of next year's Formula 1 World Championship, according to this week's AUTOSPORT magazine
The Brackley-based squad will instead concentrate on developments to its BAR005 chassis in a bid to cash in on reliability in the opening flyaway races of next season, following the trend set by Ferrari and McLaren.
"We will be running next year's engine quite early and there are quite a lot of developments on the car we want to run early, but we will probably take a leaf out of McLaren's and Ferrari's books," said the team's technical director Geoff Willis. "With four flyaways on the trot, that is probably the better way.
"We have got quite a big step on the mechanical engine-transmission side, so the old car will have an aero upgrade. I am not sure what we will call this version of this car, but we will introduce the complete new car for Europe."
McLaren has also confirmed that it will start 2004 with its MP4/18, which is due to be introduced this month.
