BAR Set to Support Change in Tyre Rules

BAR-Honda are set to support the FIA's proposal to re-introduce tyre changes during Grands Prix next season, according to team boss Nick Fry

After running on a single set of tyres for qualifying and race this season, the governing body is now looking to return to the previous rules, which allow teams to change tyres during the race.

But despite the 2005 rules seemingly favouring the Michelin-shod teams, some among them support the FIA's proposal, and BAR's Fry admitted his team are interested in the change.

He told Autosport-Atlas: "Our view is that the present number of tyres is a bit too restrictive and destroys some of the spectacle, because we are always preserving the number of laps we do.

"I know the drivers would also like more tyres, because they find it difficult to do the appropriate back-to-back tests with such a limited number of sets and miles."

Fry added that his team would support the change because it would improve racing in Formula One, even if this could be beneficial to rivals Bridgestone.

"It is a better spectacle with tyre changes during the race," Fry said. "I don't go with the view that we should rigorously defend our own interests. We also have to look at the good of the sport."
