Alonso Thinks Title will have to Wait

Championship leader Fernando Alonso believes he will have to wait a bit longer to celebrate his first Formula One title

Alonso Thinks Title will have to Wait

The Renault driver, 27 points ahead of McLaren rival Kimi Raikkonen with four races remaining, needs to score four more points than the Finn at this weekend's Belgian Grand Prix to become Formula One's youngest champion.

Alonso, however, believes the McLarens are still favourites to win at Spa and that the title will have to wait.

"I am concentrating on the race," said Alonso. "I know it is very difficult to win the Championship here because I need a Kimi retirement, basically, if I want to be a champion, and I don't think that is going to happen.

"The McLarens are favourites to win the race so I think we will have to wait for more races."

Alonso needs to score 14 points in total in the last four races to secure the title, even if Raikkonen goes on to win all of them. The Finn reckoned on Thursday he would need a lot of luck to be able to catch the Spaniard.

"We haven't given up but everyone knows it is not going to be easy without any problems for Renault," the Finn said. "Even if we win the last races it is not going to happen.

"I will do the best that I can. We will go race by race and try to win and then see what will happen at the end of the year."
