Alonso Stays Ahead as Testing Ends at Barcelona

Renault's Fernando Alonso stayed on top of the timesheets as testing at the Barcelona circuit came to an end after five days of intensive work for the Formula One teams.

Renault's Fernando Alonso stayed on top of the timesheets as testing at the Barcelona circuit came to an end after five days of intensive work for the Formula One teams.

Alonso, driving the Michelin-shod R202 chassis, was unable to improve on his quickest time from the morning session, but his best lap of 1:16.920 was good enough to keep the top spot as he worked on tyre testing for French manufacturer Michelin.

"We concluded our session with a very productive day's testing," said Renault's technical director Mike Gascoyne. "Fernando at the wheel of the hybrid car completed his programme conducting a tyre work for Michelin. At the end of the day he also run in the R202 to finish up with some chassis evaluation.

"Jarno (Trulli) concluded his programme on suspension development in last year's car. Overall we are quite satisfied because all the work that we wished to do was completed."

Spaniard Alonso finished over three tenths of a second ahead of Williams's test driver Marc Gene, who was the busiest man on track with a massive 103 laps around the Spanish circuit. Gene was over half a second quicker than teammate Juan Pablo Montoya, the Williams drivers split by Japanese Takuma Sato.

"We have experienced an all round successful test," said BMW boss Mario Theissen. "The team completed a huge programme in terms of engine and chassis development as well as tyre testing. Altogether we achieved a mileage of 3572 km this week in Barcelona.

"In view of the proposals announced by the FIA on Wednesday we modified our programme from Thursday onwards to include manual starts."

Sato, a test driver at BAR following a year racing for Jordan in 2002, worked at the wheel of the new 005 chassis for the first time today, as the Brackley-based outfit continued to put miles on the car unveiled last Wednesday. Sato set a promising 1:17.749, around a tenth behind Anthony Davidson's best time from yesterday.

"I am very impressed with the new car," said Sato. "We focused mainly on mileage today rather than set-up work but it seems we have a very good starting point. The car is quick and stable so I'm looking forward to my next test when we'll be able to work more on set-up.

"It was unfortunate that we had to lose some running time this afternoon but it's good that the team have had no major problems this week. It's great to be working with BAR again after testing with them in 2001."

Brazilian Antonio Pizzonia today continued working with the only Jaguar on track, completing 86 laps at the wheel of the R3 ahead of the launch of the new R4 next Tuesday. Pizzonia finished fifth ahead of Italian Jarno Trulli, who for the second day in a row finished at the bottom of the timesheets with the second Renault.

The teams will return to Barcelona next week for another session.
