Australian Mark Webber became the first man to hit "Champions' Wall" in Montreal this weekend when he went off in Friday testing as Spaniard Fernando Alonso topped the times ahead of this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix.

Webber, who has impressed in the Jaguar this year, got away with his collision at the final corner lightly and was quickly back out on track after returning to the pits but also had spins at turns six and eight.

He still managed to finish third but was beaten by second-placed Brazilian teammate Antonio Pizzonia, whose time was 0.770 seconds slower than young Renault driver Alonso's best time of 1:15.483, set late in the session.

Alonso finished more than a second ahead of his fourth-placed Italian teammate Jarno Trulli, who was just one tenth further ahead of the team's test driver, Scot Allan McNish.

Italian Giancarlo Fisichella, in the lead Jordan, finished 1.673 seconds off the pace as he led teammate Ralph Firman by three tenths of a second after a late improvement by the Briton.

The Minardi pair of Jos Verstappen and Justin Wilson finished at the bottom of the pile with Verstappen 2.369 seconds slower than session leader Alonso and Wilson a massive three seconds off the pace.

Trulli went off the track at both the third and tenth corners while both Alonso and Firman had off-track excursions at turn eight.
