"The most amazing lap I've ever seen," is how Wolff describes Hamilton's pole position.

Vettel: "Not ideal, obviously we wanted to get pole and we didn’t.

"For us, it was a bit of a messy qualifying session, but in the end, there was too much time missing, so no better than third."

"Wow that was a hardcore qualifying session," says Hamilton. "That lap felt like magic."

"The last time basically nobody improved," Vettel is told. He insists the track was faster.
"Lewis, this is Toto, that was the most epic lap I've ever seen around here."
"You got it, mate! Ha-ha-ha," Lewis is told by a distinctly jovial Peter Bonnington.
Hamilton punches the air inside his cockpit before climbing out of his Mercedes.
Q3 result: 1 Hamilton; 2 Verstappen; 3 Vettel; 4 Bottas; 5 Raikkonen; 6 Ricciardo; 7 Perez; 8 Grosjean; 9 Ocon; 10 Hulkenberg
Bottas, Raikkonen and Ricciardo end up fourth, fifth and sixth.
Verstappen stays second - Hamilton has pole!
Replays show Hamilton running over a kerb on exit and binning his lap.
Vettel stays third!
Vettel's middle sector isn't great, but Verstappen's is - the best of anyone so far.
Hamilton backs off - it's down to his rivals to attack him now.
Vettel IS improving - he beats Hamilton's provisional pole time in sector one.
Chequered flag.
Hamilton isn't improving on his second lap so far (not surprisingly really as attempt one was huge).

"Oh, dammit!" Grosjean exclaims, for a reason that's not entirely clear at the moment.
There's some racing for position going on on the out-lap, as Raikkonen passes both Bottas and Hamilton. Bottas is also passed by Hulkenberg.
A very confusing message from Vettel: "Try next time to get me a good out-lap, and notice that the Mercedes are a lot slower than us".

The response is "understood".
The frontrunners come back out for their second attempts.
"Pretty disconnected. First three corners was losing the rear, then losing the front [in] middle sector," Ricciardo said. Red Bull tells him his car will be reverted to how it was earlier.

First runs: 1 Hamilton; 2 Verstappen +0.319s; 3 Vettel +0.613s; 4 Bottas +0.771s; 5 Raikkonen +1.388s; 6 Ricciardo +1.593s; 7 Hulkenberg +2.872s; 8 Ocon +3.132s; 9 Perez +3.189s. No time yet: Grosjean
"That's a pretty epic lap, Lewis," Hamilton is told. No kidding.
Ricciardo's first lap is only good enough for sixth.
Verstappen beats Vettel to second, 0.319s behind Hamilton.
Vettel is 0.613s off Hamilton and is second, Bottas is third.
Raikkonen didn't exactly ease off in that lap - he was clearly pushing even in the final sector, with a major wobble at one point.
Hamilton beats Raikkonen by a massive 1.388s to go quickest.
Hulkenberg goes second, Perez fourth.
Ocon is briefly fastest, then Raikkonen does a 1m37.403s to go top.
Hamilton is seven tenths clear of Raikkonen in sector two.
