Monaco GP Thursday practice
By: Geoff Creighton
Summary
Status: Stopped
Here's the full report and results from that session, keep an eye on Autosport and motorsport.com for all the reaction and analysis from today, and we'll see you back here on Saturday morning:
The rest: 11 Hartley; 12 Perez; 13 Ocon; 14 Gasly; 15 Sirotkin; 16 Magnussen; 17 Leclerc; 18 Grosjean; 19 Stroll; 20 Ericsson
Top 10: 1 Ricciardo; 2 Verstappen +0.194s; 3 Vettel +0.572s; 4 Hamilton +0.695s; 5 Raikkonen +0.702s; 6 Bottas +0.801s; 7 Hulkenberg +1.206s; 8 Vandoorne +1.236s; 9 Alonso +1.274s; 10 Sainz +1.359s
"Probably don't need to remind you, but take it easy with those front tyres," Renault tells Hulkenberg.
Stroll's discomfort in the Williams cockpit continues - he's now complaining that his "knees are crushed".
Sainz also pits - in his case to check if the brush with the wall that he just had at Tabac has done any harm.
Hamilton is very unhappy with the supersoft tyre on his current long run, saying it's making it feel like something's wrong with the car and that he doesn't want to continue. He pits.
Sainz reports that "something smells a bit strange in the car - like brakes, I think. They smell a lot."
Top 10 as most of the focus is now on race running: 1 Ricciardo, 2 Verstappen, 3 Vettel, 4 Hamilton, 5 Raikkonen, 6 Bottas, 7 Hulkenberg, 8 Vandoorne, 9 Alonso, 10 Sainz.
Made it to Massenet - brilliant to see who is committing and who isn’t quite brave enough yet. There’s a dotted white line about 1.5m from the inside barrier and the people with confidence - like the Red Bulls, Hamilton and Vettel - don’t cross it until later through the corner. Lovely marker to see who has the confidence in the car to turn in a little later, which will be setting them better for Casino.
The Renault pit wall is told "not my problem" again: this time Hulkenberg responds with that phrase when he's told that Bottas is behind him on track running a high fuel load.
We're into the 1m11s! Ricciardo tops the pile with a 1m11.841s, and our prediction earlier that there wouldn't be any particular improvements of note is once again proven to be rubbish.
Vettel is paying tribute to famous Monaco controversies of previous years at the moment, locking up at Rascasse (think Michael Schumacher 2006) and then Mirabeau (Nico Rosberg 2014).
All but two of the cars on track at the moment are all using hypersofts for their long runs now. Crucial work to find out how long the newest, softest Pirelli tyre can last.
Ricciardo proves our timing screen claim to be utter nonsense, as he improves to sit just 0.018s behind team-mate Verstappen now.
That should be pretty much the end of the main timing screen excitement. The teams now have to cram in as much long-run work as they can into a shorter period than planned due to that stoppage earlier for the loose drain.
Interesting exchange down at Renault. "Why did we stop?" asks Sainz. He is told he needs to give the team some more long-run data because team-mate Hulkenberg has flat-spotted two sets. "I don't care, that's his problem," Sainz says, and he is politely told "It's for the team, Carlos."
