Solberg linked to IRC Abarth drive
Petter Solberg could compete in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge this season following a test in an Abarth Grande Punto
Solberg, who won the World Rally Championship in 2003, is currently driving a Citroen Xsara for his own Petter Solberg World Rally Team in the WRC. He finished third overall on the Cyprus Rally last month.
A spokesperson for Abarth said: "Solberg expressed a favourable opinion about the car and the specifications of the Super 2000 category, which features cars with a normally aspirated 2000cc engine and all-wheel transmission without electronic assistance.
"He tested with a view to participating in a few international rallies and could drive for us."
The 34-year-old Norwegian has no experience of driving Super 2000 cars, but has won 13 WRC events and earned new respect for his underdog performances in his own car this season.
Abarth currently runs two factory Grande Puntos for Anton Alen and Giandomenico Basso in the IRC, and also entered additional cars for Luca Rossetti and Umberto Scandola on the Monte Carlo Rally in January.
It is third in the manufacturers' standings on 14 points after contesting two of the three IRC rounds run so far this season.
