Warm-up: Alesi fastest

Jean Alesi set the fastest time in the warm-up for today's (Sunday) DTM race at the Nurburgring, outpacing team-mate Bernd Schneider by 0.173s

After heavy overnight rain, the track was largely dry for the session, although several damp patches loomed off the racing line. Heavy clouds on the horizon held off for the warm-up, although the prospect of rain during the race seems quite high.

Behind the AMG Mercedes duo, Karl Wendlinger was a surprise third fastest in his Abt Audi, ahead of the Mercedes of Adria winner Christijan Albers. Briton Peter Dumbreck was fifth fastest, and was once again the quickest of the Opel runners, edging Jo Winkelhock by 0.015s for the honour.

After managing just the 11th fastest time in qualifying yesterday, reigning champion Laurent Aiello's struggles continued, with the Audi driver only able to set the tenth fastest time.

Pole winner Marcel Fassler was 11th fastest, ahead of a strong showing from Gary Paffett. The Briton, in his first DTM race and with no pre-event testing, was the fastest of the year-old Mercedes runners and put experienced team-mate Stefan Mucke in the shade again.

Timo Scheider suffered a heavy crash early in the session. Coming out of the hairpin on his second lap of the morning, Scheider lost control of his Opel over the kerbing on the corner's exit. His machine slewed sideways and hit the barriers head on, leaving a big dent in the Armco and causing considerable damage to the front of the Astra.
