Scheider tops Oschersleben practice

Timo Scheider continued his strong form from last weekend, topping Saturday morning's DTM free practice session at Oschersleben

The German, who narrowly missed out on victory at Hockenheim last weekend, has so far topped every practice session this weekend, and he will be chasing a second consecutive pole position later today.

The session was the first of the weekend to remain completely dry, although temperatures remained as low as on Friday, giving some drivers difficulty getting their tyres up to temperature.

Championship leader Mattias Ekstrom was fastest for the majority of this morning's practice, but Scheider led a flurry of activity on the timing screens as drivers honed their qualifying setups in the closing minutes.

Ekstrom worked his way back up to second to complete yet another Audi 1-2, but Mercedes were closer to the pace than they managed at Hockenheim, with three drivers getting into the top five.

Paul di Resta was the top Mercedes runner again just two tenths of a second adrift, while Bruno Spengler, who completed an encouraging long run on Friday, was next up, just ahead of Jamie Green.

Martin Tomczyk was sixth fastest ahead of a trio of 2007-spec Audis, led again by series rookie Oliver Jarvis.

The British driver, who had spun off at the chicane during Friday's changeable conditions, was narrowly faster than Markus Winkelhock and Mike Rockenfeller, who qualified his one-year-old car on the front row here last year.

Tom Kristensen completed the top 10, and with Alexandre Premat 11th, the bottom of the field consisted mainly of Mercedes runners.

Ralf Schumacher was 14th in his Mercedes, and the former Grand Prix winner was just one tenth of a second slower than the fastest one-year-old Mercedes of his Mucke Motorsport teammate Maro Engel.
