Round 2: Bernd does the double
Bernd Schneider capped a perfect weekend with victory in a thrilling second race at the DTM Hockenheim opener
A massive storm in the middle of the race forced the drivers to pit for wet tyres, but through it all came Schneider for his second victory of the day.
Marcel Fassler also matched his first race performance with second place, while Peter Dumbreck was heading for a podium finish when he was punted out of third place by Manuel Reuter, the Opel driver later apologising for the incident which left the Scot in fifth place. Reuter was given a penaly by the stewards, dropping him to 13th and out of the points.
The rain began on lap 6, and as the Safety Car was scrambled virtually the entire field headed for the pits. Incredibly, Marcel Tiemann elected to stay out but against all odds he survived the restart, pitting next time by having had his moment of glory in the lead.
Klaus Ludwig was one who had seemed to gain from the pit-stops, but a stop and go penalty dropped him to ninth by the finish.
Darren Turner flew on the opening lap of the restart, charging past four cars to move up to sixth. A trip through the gravel later cost him places, and he finished in eighth place.
As Schneider and Fassler crossed the line, it was Michael Bartels who upheld Opel honour with third place, ahead of Timo Scheider. Scheider had an eventful race, starting fourth he spun in front of the pack at the first corner, but was avoided by the pack. He gained most from the rain, taking advantage of his late track position to pit earlier than most.
