Reuter urges caution over oval racing

Opel star Manuel Reuter has warned that including an oval race on the DTM calendar in the future would be risky, despite a successful day of testing at EuroSpeedway Lausitz on Monday

Reuter and Mercedes ace Uwe Alzen took turns in testing on the Turn 1 banking at full oval racing speed, before completing the rest of the road course lap. The test was organised by Dunlop, who wanted to see if its DTM rubber could accept the forces of the oval turns.

"It was definitely good fun and a new experience," said Reuter, who drove the test car during the evaluation. "But we would have to think carefully about racing on these types of corners. Running two cars in perfect conditions was fine, but 20 cars trying different lines to pass is something else."

Reuter reported that he was approaching Turn 1 at 160mph, and his minimum speed through the corner was 140mph.

"We ran through the programme with no problems," Reuter added. "This is one step, maybe we need to come back with more cars and try slipstreaming. The question is, do you go for the risk? You could easily lose five or six cars if there was a crash."
