Prost, Mansell to Race in 'Legends'

Nigel Mansell will renew his rivalry with fellow former World Champion Alain Prost in a special 'Race of Legends' at this weekend's DTM event at the Norisring in Germany

Prost, Mansell to Race in 'Legends'

Mansell and Prost will be joined in the spectacle by Emerson Fittipaldi, Jody Scheckter and Mick Doohan. The race, which aims to raise more than half a million US dollar for charity, will be decided by aggregated qualifying times as the stars battle it out in DTM cars from Mercedes-Benz, Opel and Audi.

The prospect of Mansell and Prost going head-to-head in the event is set to be a massive draw. The pair were teammates in Ferrari for the 1990 season and have not competed against each other since the end of the 1991 Formula One season. Prost was on a sabbatical during the 1992 season and, when he returned, Mansell famously left Formula One after refusing to accept terms to race alongside the incoming Prost at Williams.

DTM series boss Hans Werner Aufrecht said: "Never before in the DTM history, there has been a race like this. This is an additional highlight for both the crowds on the Norisring grandstands and the TV audience. We are truly proud that these former World Champions agreed to enter the DTM cars for this charity event."

Prost will have a slight advantage over his rivals, having tested the DTM cars at Oschersleben last month. "The DTM cars are fantastic. I had a lot of fun out there on the track," said the Frenchman.

The other drivers will test the cars at the Norisring on Friday.
