Privateer Audi squad pledges three-way fight

The Abt Sportsline Audi team has pledged to make next year's DTM a three-way title fight with Mercedes and Opel

The Kempten-based privateer has struggled to get on the pace with its stubby TT-R racer this season, a legacy of its hurried pre-season development. Since Oschersleben in September, however, it has closed the performance gap and scored half a dozen top ten finishes.

"Our aim is to become something like AMG is for Mercedes," said team boss Hans-Jurgen Abt. "Dr Wolfgang Ullrich [Audi's motorsport director] has said he is happy that Abt is in the DTM with Audis, which is a big compliment."

Abt will benefit from rule changes over the winter which are intended to give the TT more of chance next year.

"We need to be allowed to develop the aerodynamics of the car to be allowed to challenge," added Abt. "If this happens, I'm sure we can present a car capable of winning races next season."

Although Abt is committed to running the TT next season, it will consider shifting its attentions to the new A4 Coupe for 2002.
