Paffett for works Merc
Gary Paffett says a deal is all but done to ensure that he will be in a works 2004 Mercedes for this year's DTM. The British driver has signed a deal with AMG and is awaiting confirmation that he'll be in one of the latest cars.
"Mercedes should run four works cars this year," said Paffet. "We've signed our contracts and I'm just waiting to hear that I'll be in one of the new cars. I think I'll get one."
"I can tell you that Mercedes are very aware of the threat from Audi. Their works effort with the likes of Frank Biela and Tom Kristensen will be our main competition this year. But Opel seem to be coming on strong as well, and they've now got Heinz-Harald Frentzen."
Paffett had an impressive debut season last year after joining Mercedes at short notice. He had to make do with a 2002-spec car, but led races on occasion. He wants the DTM championship this year, but says the Formula 1 dream is still alive.
"The Mercedes connection doesn't do me any harm and I'm hoping to organise a McLaren test this year. I want a Formula 1 race drive in 2005. That's the ultimate dream, and it will happen."
