Opel junior Scheider fastest in warm-up
Opel junior Timo Scheider was a surprise fastest in the warm-up for rounds 9 and 10 of the DTM at the Nurburgring.
Scheider's Bayern Munich-sponsored Opel V8 Coupe set a time of 1m40.384s on a track still slightly damp after more heavy overnight rain.
The warm-up looked to be replicating qualifying as pole-man Bernd Schneider occupied the top spot for much of the session with second-on-the-grid Uwe Alzen right behind him, despite a long trip across the grass at the Bit-Kurve.
A late run from Scheider pushed almost name sake Schneider down to second as Klaus Ludwig moved into third spot.
The drama for the morning came from Ludwig's AMG Mercedes team mate Marcel Fassler who was first onto the track as the pit lane opened. He promptly went quickest, but on his third lap went off at the Dunlop-kurve destroying the front of his Warsteiner-backed, AMG-run CLK.
Alzen did not improve on his first quick time and finished the session propping up the bottom of the top 10.
Team Rosberg driver Darren Turner was in the top 10 for most of the session, behind team mate Pedro Lamy. A late lap from Opel Team Phoenix's Michael Bartels pushed Turner down to 11th, making it six Opels to four Mercedes in the top 10.
