Norisring, race two: Schneider's third

Bernd Schneider made the most of a wet and drying track to take his third victory of the season at the Norisring on Sunday. The Mercedes driver ran third on the opening lap, behind race one winner Jo Winkelhock and Klaus Ludwig, but moved up to second when Ludwig ran wide at the first hairpin on lap two.

There seemed little he could do to close the gap on Winkelhock, though, whose Opel was well suited to the wet conditions. However, with a dry line slowly appearing, Schneider took a gamble on lap 11 and dived into the pits for slick tyres.

He resumed well down the order, but it quickly became clear that all his rivals would have to stop as well. Winkelhock came in for tyres on lap 15 and, once he resumed in third, it was Schneider who had seized the advantage at the head of the field, from Ludwig.

Ludwig could not keep pace with Schneider though and slowly began to fall into the grasp of Winkelhock, who himself was being pushed hard by Manuel Reuter. By lap 30 the trio were nose to tail and at the hairpin on lap 34 the ordered changed when Winkehock ran wide, allowing Reuter to move up a place.

Seven laps later Reuter tried to dive inside Ludwig at the first corner, but overshot the corner after trying to brake on a damp part of the track. He finally got it right on lap 39 as Ludwig conceded second place at the same turn. Reuter eventually finished 14.8 seconds behind Schneider, with Ludwig just 0.9 seconds further adrift at the chequered flag.

Winkelhock eventually settled for fourth position, with Michael Bartels fifth and Uwe Alzen sixth. Briton Peter Dumbreck, who had started on slicks and looked poised for an excellent result, collided with Timo Scheider on lap nine before spinning on lap 16. He recovered to finish ninth. Darren Turner finished 12th.
