Lehto to race Opel at A1-Ring

Former Grand Prix star JJ Lehto will make his DTM comeback at the A1-Ring in Austria next month in an Opel Astra

The 36-year-old will replace Belgian Yves Olivier for what is being described as 'initially a one-off' appearance. He last raced in the DTM and its sister ITC series in 1995 and '96.

"I am really happy to return to Opel and to the DTM," said Lehto. Since out time together with the Calibra in the DTM/ITC in '95/'96, the contact to Opel has always remained.

"I have been following the new DTM from the very beginning and I have never made it a secret that I would like to race in the series again. The DTM is a high-class championship with many top drivers and fascinating cars. I will see many familiar faces again."

Lehto impressed Opel in a test at Dijon in France last week. The manufacturer's motorsport boss Volker Strycek said: "The co-operation with JJ during the test was very positive. Following this experience, we now want JJ to race for us too."

Lehto made 62 GP starts for Benetton, Sauber, Dallara and Onyx. He moved on to the DTM before enjoying a successful sportscar career with BMW. This year he has raced for Cadillac in the American Le Mans Series and the Le Mans 24 Hours.
