Lausitz: Schneider beats Dumbreck home

Bernd Schneider leapt to the top of the DTM championship thanks to a crushingly dominant victory at EuroSpeedway Lausitz today (Sunday) ahead of Opel's Peter Dumbreck

Schneider led from start to finish, and not even super-quick pitstops from Opel could allow Dumbreck a sniff of victory. "It went really perfectly for me," said winner Schneider. "I got a brilliant start and had good speed all the way through the race."

Third placed starter Dumbreck outdragged the Abt Sportsline Audi of Mattias Ekstrom at the start, and eventually finished 6.8secs behind Schneider but admitted: "I had to make sure I brought it home."

Ekstrom claimed the final spot on the podium, although Opel's Timo Scheider ran him very close, but the German just couldn't find a way past the Swede. Jean Alesi was a solid fifth, ahead of Alain Menu who suffered two spins. One he put down to a handling imbalance he fought against all race, and the other was caused by Marcel Fassler, who was unsighted as he left the pits and speared into the side of the Astra.

Fassler was given a stop/go penalty and finished 10th, dropping him to third in the points standings. Erstwhile series leader Christijan Albers struggled to fight back from a poor qualifying and grabbed a couple of points in seventh, ahead of reigning champion Laurent Aiello (Audi).
