HWA duo Green and Schumacher win team relay on first day of DTM's Munich Olympic Stadium showcase

Saturday ran to a 'team relay' format, in which two pairs of drivers from each of the series' three manufacturers went head to head, with each car in the pair completing half of each of the knock-out races. The pairs were formed after timed practice in the morning, with the first and fourth quickest drivers from each marque teaming up, and the second and third fastest doing likewise.

Green and Schumacher knocked out Audi pair Miguel Molina (Phoenix) and Mattias Ekstrom (Abt) in the second quarter-final, then came up against their HWA team-mates Gary Paffett and Christian Vietoris in semi-final one, where they were also triumphant.

That set up a grand final with Abt Audi duo Timo Scheider and Adrien Tambay, who had started their progress to the final by beating BMW's Augusto Farfus (RBM) and 2011 Munich individual competition winner Bruno Spengler (Schnitzer) in the quarters.

Scheider and Tambay then defeated another BMW pair in their semi in the shape of RMG's Joey Hand and Schnitzer's Dirk Werner. This team had lost their quarter final to Paffett and Vietoris, but were awarded the 'lucky loser' spot in the semis by virtue of having the quickest time of any losing pair.

There would be no second reprieve for Werner and Hand, as Scheider and Tambay went on to challenge Green and Schumacher in the final, where the Mercedes team prevailed.

Of the drivers knocked out in the morning time trials, reigning champion Martin Tomczyk was the highest-profile casualty. The RMG driver was only fifth quickest among the BMW pack.

The second part of the non-points event on Sunday dispenses with the team relay format to become an individual knock-out contest between all the DTM drivers.
